Public Art returns

Wyatt Earp and Doc HollidayToday marks the return of the public art, but perhaps only for this week. I did get a couple of images shot over the long weekend, but not too many. Perhaps two or three in total. Besides, for me, vacation is fast approaching, and while gone, I don't expect to update very much. Sorry.

Just outside the Tucson train depot, stand these two men cast in bronze. One has the name Dan Bates on the coat, but otherwise they have no identifying marks. Who are they? What is the connection with the depot? Why are they carrying guns?

For those that know a bit about western history might recognize these two fellas: Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp. Apparently in the 1880s they caught up with Frank Stillwell at the Tucson train station and shot him dead. Frank you may recall was involved in perhaps the most famous gunfight, that of OK corral fame, and Wyatt and Doc came to avenge the death of Wyatt's brother.

So today, we commemorate the shooting for some reason or another. And, of course, we include it in the Tucson Public Art collection.
