Now here's something that's not quite local, but I can heartily recommend: cheese from Black Mesa Ranch up in Snowflake AZ. We had some shipped down here just the other week, specifically a boule (which means ball and is close to mozzarella in taste and consistency), and a couple of pound of feta. So far, we've eaten most of the boule and wow is it good! Highly recommended.
We have yet to try the feta, but if it is anywhere near the quality of the other cheeses that we've gotten from Black Mesa Ranch, I'm sure we'll be quite happy, and we'll be ordering more.
Now, if you go to the site, you'll see that the cheese might be pricier than what you are used to pay. It is worth it.
Now all we need to do is find someone that makes cheddar.

A trip to the farm
Yesterday we headed up to the farm.
Part of what Tucson CSA does is to help people learn about where their food comes from and why it is important to buy local. Most of this is basically by setting an example, but twice a year the CSA people arrange a day outing to the farm where the food is grown. As part of our effort to learn a bit more about eating local, we headed up to Glendale, AZ.
Once on the farm, Farmer Frank took us on a short tour where we got to pick pretty much anything that we wanted: corn, melons, cucumbers, melons, more melons, and still more melons. As you can tell, it's melon season. After the tour we headed back to the house where we were treated to a huge lunch of: melons, roasted corn, quasidillas, grilled squash, potatoes. Was it ever good. Even the farm cats were wandering around eating scraps of melon, potatoes, nopalitos, just about anything.
We had a great time, brought home a number of freshly picked melons. We know they were fresh, 'cause we picked 'em ourselves, and a renewed appreciation for all the hard work that Farmer Frank does to provide us with a great selection every week.
To him, we say Thanks!
