Center for Creative Photography

This past Friday we decided to spend the day wandering around the downtown area and check out a couple of the galleries as there were several exhibitions that we wanted to see.

First up was a trip to the Center for Creative Photography. We've talked about visiting off and on for years. Literally years. I don't really know why we put it off. It's just one of those things that happens.

Anyway, we had noticed a exhibit of works from the f/64 group and decided to make sure to see it. It was great! The Center has four large rooms at the University dedicated to displaying photos from their collection -- they are the archive for Weston, Ansel Adams, etc. so the stuff they show is really good. And how much does it cost? Just offer up a donation, that's all they ask. For those that are new to Tucson, this is just one of the great things they have down on campus, and available to all.

Afterwards, we stopped in Bison Witches to get a sandwich the size of our heads. If you've been there, you know what I mean. This place serves up the largest sandwiches this side of, well, I don't know of any place that has larger sandwiches. All served up on local bread (from the small planet bakery). Stop in some time. It's really good.

Then on to a couple of galleries down on Congress street. We've been glad to see more and more opening up in the core downtown area. In both cases, we just wandered in, looked around and wandered out. No one tried to sell anything. In fact, in both we didn't even see anyone (one was completely empty, the other someone was around the corner).

To finish up with the arty stuff, we headed down to the Temple of Music and Art for an exhibition based on old Tucson postcards. It was a lot of fun to look at the enlargements of the postcards and figure out where in Tucson they were taken.

After all that, we headed back to pick up our Tucson CSA food. While our feet were tired, it was good to know that we live in such a walkable city.

Get out and explore it yourself.
